Danielle Vargas / Team Discraft NAME: Danielle Vargas
TEAM: Womens
HOMETOWN: Helotes, TX
PDGA #: 18131
2007 PDGA RATING: 853
BORN: 1976
day gig: I am the proud mother of three beautiful children. Mark is 13, Tyler 12 and Bethany is 8. I am currently employed at Twisted Flyer.
STARTED IN DISC GOLF: 1999
All THAT GLITTERS:
  • 2005 Rookie of the Year Nominee
  • Founder of the Ladies Of Live Oak female disc golf club.
  • MEMORABLE DISC GOLF MOMENT
At the 2005 Z-Boaz Open I hit an ace on the third hole in the tournament. I also earned my way into the skins match and played with top touring pros and a huge gallery. It was the first tournament I ever cashed in and a very exciting way to start my professional disc golf career.
    Danielle's Disc Golf Tips
Many new players fail to choose the right disc for the shot needed. It is sometimes due to not knowing or researching discs, but I have also seen newer players choosing discs because they are familiar with them and don't want to change. Keeping an open mind is necessary in disc golf because the people, players and equipment are always changing.

Visualization is very important for successful disc golf. Athletes in most sports use visualization as part of their training and playing rituals. You can apply the same practices to your game and lower your score significantly. I tend to visualize even before playing, the night before or on my way to the course I think about what I want to happen and try to see it in my mind. Many new players tend to be so excited and ready to throw they forget to take the time to think about what they want. Before and while playing think about how your shots are going to fly, think about how your form is going to look while throwing. Visualize the exact path you intend your disc to go and make it happen. You will be amazed at the difference in your game after visualizing. Once you really visualize, focus and commit to your shot your game will get better and your skills will increase.

In The Disc Golf Bag: Drivers
    Disc Comments
    FLX Surge
    (167 gm)
The FLX Surge is my #1 driver and is great for players with slower arm speeds. It is a straight disc that will hyzer at the end. I use it in a light wind and for hyzer shots. I love the way it holds the line you put it on. The FLX plastic makes it extra grippy!
    ESP Avenger SS
    (169 gm)
The SS Avenger is a great baby sister to my Z Avenger. I use it for wide open distance shots and for anhyzers. Very easily turned over.
    Z Avenger
    (170 gm)
The Avenger is great for most shots needed and I trust it in the wind. This disc is not so overstable that I can't throw it, yet it is not easily turned over either. I use a newer Avenger in stronger winds and for some forehand shots. I recommend the Avenger to people with all arm speeds because the disc is that versatile.
    ESP Pulse
    (167 - 171)
The Pulse is one of the stronger discs in my bag, and I started throwing it right away. I use this disc almost like my Surge, but when I need a little more stability. I also throw the Pulse for skip shots. I have a heavier Pulse I use for stronger headwinds and hyzers.
    X XS
    (170 gm)
The XS is a great disc for anhyzers! You can pretty much make this disc do exactly what you want it to but you better be sure of the shot because it's not flexing out or coming back. It holds the line I put it on for sure.
    X Xpress
    (169 gm)
You can pretty much make this disc do exactly what you want it to but you better be sure of the shot because it's not flexing out or coming back. It holds the line I put it on for sure.
    Z XS
    (164 - 166)
The Z XS is my trick shot disc. I use it for forehand and backhand rollers. It is also my disc of choice for thumbers. I started using this disc because it is easily controlled and doesn't get crazy at the end of the throw.
    Z Predator
    (172 gm)
This is the most overstable disc I have in my bag. I use it in high head winds, for big hyzers and skip shots. The Predator usually only comes out in extreme situations because it is very overstable.
In The Disc Golf Bag: Midrange
    Disc Comments
    X Wasp
    (162 - 172)
I have thrown the Wasp since I started playing disc golf. This disc is one of my all time favorites. It can be thrown in all kinds of conditions. I use my older X Wasp for straight shots and have started to incorporate a newer X Wasp more for hyzers and wind.
    Z Wasp
    (162 - 174)
The Z Wasp is a great overstable midrange. I use it for the straight shot with the fade at the end. This Wasp can be used for shorter hyzer shot or upshots with a headwind.
    Z Buzzz
    (170 - 172)
The Z Buzzz is a straight flying disc for me. It is also the midrange in my bag that I can turn over and it will hold the line. Any type of Buzzz is a great disc for beginners because it will hold the line thrown.
    ESP Comet
    (172 gm)
The ESP Comet is a straight flying disc for me. It is also the midrange in my bag that I can turn over and it will hold the line. I had never thrown a Comet until this new one came out and now I know what the rave has been about for all those years.
In The Disc Golf Bag: Putt and Approach
    Disc Comments
    Soft APX
    (170-172)
Once I found the APX, I never putted with anything else. I admit I originally picked it because of the cute purple color, but I soon learned it is a very good disc. The plastic is soft but not too soft and sticks in the basket. It feels good in my hand and I know how it flies.
