Team Discraft's John Maiuro

John Maiuro / Team Discraft NAME: John 'My Hero' Maiuro
TEAM: Pro D
HOMETOWN: Euless, TX
PDGA #: 10019
2007 PDGA RATING: 1000
BORN: 1972
STARTED IN DISC GOLF: 1993
HOT FINISHES:
  • Cashed in all but one of attended PDGA Majors
  • A handful of PDGA wins since moving up to Open in 1998
  • A dozen Top 10 and several Top 5 finishes at SuperTours
  • MEMORABLE DISC GOLF MOMENT:
Playing on the leader card at National Doubles with partner Tim Jendel dueling Ron Russell and Scott Stokely. Unfortunately, we couldn't hold on against such tough competition.
    John's Disc Golf Tips
Keep your selection of discs simple until you have more experience. Most beginners have too many molds in their bag to choose from, any haven't spent enough time to master any of them. Minimize your disc selection and learn five to seven molds inside and out.

     John Maiuro / Team Discraft
John Maiuro is a familiar face at long standing SuperTour events in his homestate of Texas. He serves as course pro at Veteran's Park Disc Golf Course in Arlington, and as an ADGA club officer. His other dg volunteer activities include producing bag tags for disc golf organizations, clubs, and tournaments at no cost.
When throwing for distance, a lot of intermediate players put too much air underneath the disc. A nose up attitude will result in a loss of air speed and spin, and subsequently the disc will stall. I recommend lowering the trajectory line. This will help keep the nose of the disc down, and will help maintain the speed and glide throughout the disc's flight.

If someone tells you there's only one effective putting style, they're wrong. No one style of putting is better than the other. Hyzer, anhyzer, straddle, and push putting styles have all won World titles. COMFORT and ROUTINE PRACTICE is the key. Putt, putt, putt until you get tired; then go putt some more.

Uphill putting: Do you hit the pan more often than not while putting uphill? A simple lift of the chin might be all that you need to make that putt. Consciously try to make the bottom of your chin parallel to the angle or grade of the hill you are putting up. Simply said, lift that chin a little bit! I think you'll like the results.

Better rain performance: Rain, rain, go away so that i can throw far today. A shorter, slower, more precautious run-up doesn't automatically mean less distance off of the tee. Try using a disc that is a tad less stable than what you would normally throw if conditions were optimal. Let the disc do the work!
    COURSES YOU SHOULD PLAY:
    Course Comments
    ke'Ohana
    East TX
A private resort hosting the most challenging and aesthetically pleasing Par 72 course in the universe. Hazards such as lakes, ponds, creeks, gravesites, manmade waterfalls, Stonehenge and a real island green makes this the most unique disc golf experience ever.
    Winthrop Gold
    Rock Hill, SC
This course takes everything that you've got to score well.
    Red Hawk
    Crystal River, FL
Wonderful use of natural hazards and demanding holes makes this course an absolute must play. Manatees, alligators, red hawks and Discraft discs, how can you go wrong?
    Renaissance Gold
    Charlotte, NC
Awesome elevation and scenery. A really tough course if mismanaged
    Veteran's Park and Z-Boaz
    Arlington, TX
Two great SuperTour courses 15 minutes from my house! You'll need every type of shot to shoot well at either course.
In The Disc Golf Bag: Drivers
    Disc Comments
    Z Flash
    (max weight)
The Z-Flash is the farthest flying disc in my bag. I throw it backhand in low wind situations. Definitely my primary distance driver in normal conditions.
    ESP Avenger SS
    (max weight)
The Avenger SS is the most versatile disc in my bag. I use it primarily for a long distance roller but I also like to throw it. Anhyzers, tunnel shots, sky rollers, hyzer flips, tailwind bombs, you name it! It's also great for those hole distances that are in between your midrange discs and drivers. It's so easy to throw!
    ESP Surge
    (max weight)
The Surge takes over when I feel the wind is too strong for my Z-Flash. It has huge glide with enough stability to take on moderate head winds.
    Z Predator
    (172 - 174)
Possibly the greatest driver ever made! The Z-Pred can handle any wind. I use it for major headwind drives, hyzer shots, skip shots, flex shots, sidearm shots, cut rollers, and trick shots.
    Z Xtreme
    (max weight)
The workhorse of my bag. I've had an Xtreme in my bag since the day Scott Stokely recommended one. They're hard to find these days, but look around. It's the best spike hyzer/knife shot disc in the World. It's perfect for sidearm shots too. Is it windy today? Nobody told my Xtreme that it was windy. I'll admit that I can't throw it more than 325 feet, but anything inside of that and this disc is money.
In The Disc Golf Bag: Midrange
    Disc Comments
    Z Wasp
    (175 - 178)
Here's a disc with incredible durability! I use the Z-Wasp for many types of shots. Primarily, I use it for hyzer approach shots. I also use it on very windy days. Having a midrange disc that is barely affected by strong wind gives me a huge advantage. I also throw sidearm shots, and helix shots with my Z Wasp.
    X Buzzz
    (175 - 178)
I use the X Buzzz for my primary midrange disc. It is perfect for straight shots, and anhyzers alike. The X plastic has a great grippy feel, yet it is surprisingly durable.
    Z Buzzz
    (177 - 178)
The Z-Buzzz is so awesome! It is a midrange disc that I use for slightly windy days. It is a little more overstable than the X Buzzz, so it is great for dead straight shots that need to move a little left at the end of the flight. However, this disc is very easy to manipulate.
In The Disc Golf Bag: Putt and Approach
    Disc Comments
    D Challenger
    (max weight)
The Pro-D Challenger is a great putt and approach disc. I use it as driver on many short holes. Being able to throw a putter for an upshot or short drive has the advantage over a traditional midrange disc because a putter flies slower, and is less likely to skip away from the basket. The Pro D Challenger also replaces my primary putter when the wind is howling.
    Swirl APX
    (max weight)
The Swirl APX is my primary putter. The have a great feel to them, they seem to grab the chains on impact, and every one produced is visually unique due to the Swirl process. They also make great turnover, anyhzer, short range drivers. They are simply SWIRLICIOUS!
